Oblivion IA: Field Operations
John was a Karate prodigy growing up. He is the best student in his dojo, the legendary Cobra Kai. By age 17 he had established himself as the most formidable martial artist in the state of California and had won an unprecedented three State Championships in a row. However, as he was preparing for to compete in a fourth championship, a new boy, Daniel LaRusso, moved into town. Daniel immediately started putting the moves on John’s girlfriend, Ali. Ali was a bit of a tart, so she generally likes flirting and aggravating boys and then lying to John and getting him to beat them up. John had caught on to her tricks though and was trying not to get suckered into beating up people just so Ali could get her thrills. John explained that to Daniel, but Daniel was infatuated with Ali and Ali convinced John that Daniel was stalking her and making her feel like he was going to do something bad to her. John had enough of Daniel stalking Ali and confronted Daniel about his behavior. Daniel got mouthy, so John slapped him around a little bit. After several run-ins with the little twerp, Daniel seems to get the message and disappears for a few weeks, then suddenly returns with some dirty tricks and a truly despicable mentor, Kesuke Miyagi. Miyagi possesses arcane powers and uses his powers to aid Daniel in competing in the karate tournament, ultimately cheating John out of the championship. Not realizing that Daniel had cheated, John shows his good sportsmanship and gives Daniel the championship trophy himself, congratulating the lying little sneak. John’s sensei, John Kreese realizes that Miyagi had used arcane powers to cheat for Daniel and confronted Miyagi after the tournament, but Miyagi overpowers him using his mystical powers. John realizes that in order to compete, he will have to learn arcane powers himself, so he travels to China and studied at the Siulàhm Jí monastery with a martial arts master known as the Ancient One. John studied for a year and learns to tap into his inner strength. He became proficient at utilizing arcane powers and returned to face Daniel in the Karate Championship the following year, utilizing protective arcane powers to circumvent Miyagi’s interference and successfully defeating Daniel. After the tournament, Miyagi approached John and extended an invitation to him, if John defeated Daniel in a fight to the death, John could take Daniel’s place as Miyagi’s apprentice. John declined the invitation and Miyagi swore revenge. John realized that Daniel was not the true threat at all, he was merely a symptom of the problem and Miyagi was the source of the growing evil threatening their town. Daniel attacked John again, this time enlisting the aid of Ali, John’s former girlfriend. She too had been training with Miyagi and after luring John into a trap, the evil trio nearly succeeded in killing John. He escaped with his life and but was forced to flee. John enlisted the aid of his sister, Scarlett. Scarlett had been living with their mother in England, but when she learned that John was in trouble, she offered to help. Scarlett introduced John to one of her friends, Harry who had begun to aid her in unlocking her own sorcerous potential. Together, Scarlett and John honed their arcane skills. A year later, they returned to California and faced the empire of evil that Miyagi and his foul apprentices Daniel and Ali had built. Scarlett battled Ali and John easily defeated Daniel but offered mercy one last time to the weak minded imbecile. Daniel refused, so John ended the threat once and for all. Miyagi had been sitting by, cackling with glee to see the battle, and with Daniel’s death, he offered John a “place at his side” once again. John refused, and Miyagi began to throw lightning at him. John dodged around the room and kept the evil master’s attention. In the meantime, Ali had decided to gain an advantage in her battle with Scarlett by grabbing a sword. Scarlett ended the duel by shooting Ali. Miyagi was distracted by the gun shots turned to Scarlett, readying a spell. With his sister in danger, John lost his reluctance to kill and dove at the evil master, ripping Miyagi’s heart out with a single strike. Afterwards, John returned each summer to the monastery to study and improve his skills, even as he pursued a college degree. He decided to go overseas and pursue a degree in England. While at college, he was approached by Oblivion, a secret transnational organization protecting the world from a number of things from alien, to demonic, to magical, to things and occurrences from other dimensions. Oblivion told John that he had drawn their attention because of his arcane abilities. They offered to pay for his college and offered him a chance to join their agency and protect the world from things that go bump in the night. He practiced both his arcane skills and martial arts and after 6 years, he graduated with a Master’s Degree in International Management. Due to John’s focus on education and the arcane, his martial arts skills have atrophied somewhat. Upon graduating basic training though, he is ready for his first assignment and intends to and he joined the agency to use his abilities to protect the world.
